FAQs

The questions families ask us most: about how we work, what to expect, and how to get started.

Getting started

Some common signs:

  • The school keeps calling about your child’s behavior or progress
  • Your child can’t read at grade level, or needs the same concept explained far more than other kids
  • Your child struggles with social cues, interrupts constantly, or has trouble connecting with peers
  • Something just feels off, but you’re not sure what

If any of that sounds familiar, reach out here, and we’ll help you figure out if an evaluation makes sense.

You don’t have to figure that out. Tell us what you’re noticing and we’ll point you in the right direction during intake.

Yes. While most of our clients are children, we perform many evaluations for adults as well.

Usually not. Most commercial insurance plans and Medicaid don’t require one. If yours does, we’ll let you know and help you sort it out.

Therapy only works when the fit is right. If something isn’t clicking, let us know — we’ll make it right, whether that means a different therapist on our team or a referral elsewhere.

The process

Typically a few weeks — sometimes less for shorter evaluations like ABA referrals. During intake, we’ll give you a clear timeline for your specific evaluation.

It depends on the type of evaluation. ABA referral assessments are about 30 minutes. Most other evaluations involve under two hours of testing, sometimes split across sessions if needed.

No. A meaningful evaluation involves intake, testing, scoring, and clinical review, which takes more than a couple of days. What we can promise is that we’ll get it to you significantly faster than the industry standard.

A parent or caregiver can serve as a facilitator, helping redirect your child without helping with answers. If virtual testing isn’t working, we have in-person options in Brooklyn and Long Island.

Virtual evaluations

Yes. Our virtual evaluations use the same gold-standard assessment tools, are administered by the same licensed clinicians, and follow the same diagnostic protocols as in-person testing.

We send a tablet to your home so you have everything you need (therapy patients can request one too). Once it arrives, we walk you through setup and do a quick room check to make sure everything’s ready. Your child then completes the testing with a clinician guiding them live on screen, using tools built specifically for virtual use so the experience is smooth and the results are accurate.

We handle as much as possible virtually, but in-person options are available in Brooklyn and Long Island when needed.

Yes. Research consistently shows that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person for most people. For many families, virtual sessions make it easier to show up consistently, which makes it work even better.

Insurance & payment

Yes. We accept most major insurance plans. We’ll verify your coverage during intake and walk you through exactly what’s covered before you commit to anything.

After the evaluation

For most evaluations, you’ll have a feedback session with a supervising psychologist to walk through findings and next steps. We coordinate directly with schools, attorneys, and providers who need to be looped in. For ABA referrals, we send the referral directly so services can begin right away.

Understanding evaluations

A psychoeducational evaluation focuses on learning differences and is the go-to for school accommodations and IEPs. A neuropsychological evaluation is broader, covering attention, memory, executive function, and emotional regulation. It’s used for more complex cases.

If you’re not sure which one you need, we’ll figure it out together during intake.

Structured questionnaires we send to parents, teachers, or caregivers before testing. These help us get a fuller picture of how your child functions in different settings.

The short answer: better infrastructure.

Most diagnostic practices still rely on paper intake, manual scheduling, and reports written entirely by hand over many days. We’ve streamlined intake, scheduling, and reporting with modern tech, without changing anything about the quality of the clinical work itself.

ABA is a structured, intensive program with specific targets and measurable goals — most commonly used for children with autism. Behavioral therapy is broader and more flexible, focusing on understanding and shifting patterns through conversation and practical strategies. Both look at the why behind behavior. The approach we use depends on what your child actually needs.

What we evaluate and treat

No. While these can sometimes overlap with conditions we evaluate, treating them requires specialized care that’s outside our scope. We’re happy to help point you toward the right provider.

No. Our therapy services focus on children, individuals, and families.

No. We don’t treat addiction, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or other severe and persistent mental illnesses. If that’s what you’re dealing with, we can help point you toward the right kind of care.

Not at this time. We don’t offer psychiatric medication management or prescriptions.
